HASTINGS REGATTA REPORT

Blue skies and a calm sea greeted Folkestone Rowing Club when they arrived at Hastings on Saturday.  Rowers have had a long wait for a regatta after rough seas have seen the first two cancelled.

The Junior Ladies crew of Lois Williams, Agnieska Gniot, Nicki Devine and Lesley Woodsford coxed by Nathan took third place in their first outing of the season.

Marc Alderman having recently suffered a back injury competed in both the Junior and Senior Sculls taking 6th and 4th place. Sam Milton rowed well in the Junior Sculls taking the edge on Marc by achieving fifth place.  Steve Tupper having rowed in two fours races jumped into his sculler to take 5th place in the Senior Sculls.

The Novice Boys crew of Nathan Belcher-Wilson, Ben Donnelly, Mark Edgar and James Leppard coxed by Martin Fakely had an amazing race for the first time in this combination. They were impeded at the turns but raced to the line taking a fine second place.  It was only later that the umpires decided to disqualify them for the incident at the turns.  Despite this the crew are determined to show their worth hoping to win their novices this season.

The highlight of the day saw two of the club’s most experienced crews take to the water in the Veterans Fours.  The Veterans B crew of Steve Edgar, Terry Smith,  Chris Lewis and Martin Fakely coxed by Mark Edgar rowed off the start into first place closely followed by the other four crews.  Once again there were problems at the turns with Bexhill causing a clash of blades with the B crew.  Folkestone A who have maintained a strict training programme for eight months had taken a healthy lead over the other crews and rowed to the line to take a well deserved first place.

The day’s racing was over unusually early, allowing people to enjoy the beautiful weather. The next Regattas are scheduled to take place over the weekend of 15th and 16th June at Hove and Bexhill.

Anyone interested in rowing is welcome at the Club on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings between 6-8pm.
